For fourth-year medical students, Match Day is one of the biggest milestones of the entire medical school journey. It is the moment when years of coursework, clinical rotations, interviews, and rank lists finally lead to one defining answer: where residency begins.
If you are wondering when Match Day 2026 is, the short answer is Friday, March 20, 2026. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) releases results at 12 p.m. Eastern Time, and many medical schools celebrate with formal Match Day ceremonies at that time. Match Day traditionally falls on the Friday of the third week in March.
When Is Match Day 2026?
Match Day 2026 is Friday, March 20, 2026. On that day at 12 p.m. ET, applicants learn where they matched through the NRMP R3 system and email, while schools across the country host envelope-opening ceremonies and celebrations.
Key Match Week 2026 Dates
Match Week starts on Monday, March 16, 2026. At 10:00 a.m. ET that day, applicants learn whether they matched, and SOAP begins for eligible, unmatched or partially matched applicants. At 11:00 a.m. ET, SOAP applicants can start preparing applications. SOAP concludes on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. ET, after four offer rounds. Then Match Day follows on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. ET.
What Happens on Match Day?
After earning an M.D. or D.O., graduates still need supervised residency training before practicing independently. Match Day is when students find out which specialty they matched into and which residency program they will attend.
That result can shape everything from day-to-day responsibilities to future fellowship options, practice setting, lifestyle, and long-term earning potential. It is also why Match Day is such a major emotional event for students, families, and medical schools alike.
For many soon-to-be residents, this is also when practical preparation kicks into high gear. Along with paperwork and relocation plans, many graduates begin shopping for residency essentials, including diagnostic tools, white coat accessories, and clinical gear they will use every day.
What If You Don’t Match?
Not matching does not mean the process is over. Applicants who are eligible for the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) can access the List of Unfilled Programs starting Monday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. ET, begin preparing applications at 11:00 a.m. ET, and may be contacted by programs beginning Tuesday, March 17 at 8:00 a.m. ET.

Match Day by the Numbers
The most recent completed NRMP cycle shows the Match continues to grow. In the 2025 Main Residency Match, there were 43,237 training positions offered, with 40,764 positions filled when the matching algorithm ran. NRMP also reported 52,498 registered applicants, making it the largest Match in history at the time.
For applicant outcomes, U.S. MD seniors posted a 93.5% PGY-1 match rate, while DO seniors reached 92.6%, an all-time high for osteopathic seniors.
Those figures show just how competitive Match has become, but they also reflect continued growth in residency training opportunities.
Match Day 2026 Is Only the Beginning
Match Day 2026 is more than a calendar date. It is the moment medical students officially take the next step into residency and begin shaping the future of their careers.
If you are preparing for Match Week, stay organized, know the SOAP timeline, and make sure you are ready for life after graduation too. From stethoscopes to residency-ready essentials, having the right tools on hand can make the transition into training feel a little smoother.
